BROOKLYN-The Michigan State cross country finals took place at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn on Saturday. Two Alpena freshman boys competed in the division one event.

Mitchell Day picked up a 94th overall placement with a time of 16:41.7. Isaac Cross was 156th overall with a time of 17:04.

In freshman placement, Day came in fourth place while Cross was seventh.

Joe Traynham of Onaway ran in the division four state championships. He came in 92nd with an individual time of 18:13.6. This time gave him a 28th placement in the junior division.

Alcona set Megan Quick to the division four girls championship. She picked up a 79th placement with a time of 21:20.4. She came in 22nd in the senior girls category.

The Rogers City girls team was the only local cross country team to compete in the event. They came in 25th, with a team score of 620.

Top finishers for Rogers City included 59th place Emily Malocha (21:25.5), 120nd place Sami Bober (23:27.5), 138th place Rebecca Myers (24:16.0), 149th place Victoria Bullock (24:39.9), 154th Amber Wirgau (25:00.4) and 160th place Alysse Hempel (25:22.1).

RAPID RIVER-Posen fell to Rapid River in the first round of district playoffs.

Posen struck first in the first quarter off an 11-yard Nick Hincka run to go up 7-0 with 2:37 left.

Rapid River took the lead 12 seconds later off a 46-yard pass to Jake Pearson to take an 8-7 lead. They scored again in the first off a 7-yard run to go up 16-7.

The Rockets scored four more touchdowns in the second quarter while Posen was limited to one. Hincka picked up the touchdown on a 69-yard run. Rapid River held a 54-13 lead into the half.

The Posen defense held Rapid River to one touchdown in the second half and scored two more of their own, one off a 63-yard Hincka pass to Matthew Wisniewski in the third and the last off a 19-yard Hincka pass to Leon Beccard in the fourth.

Travis Sharpe hit three passes for 10 yards, while Hincka hit 11 for 132 and two touchdowns. Sharpe ran for 126 yards while Hincka ran for 124.

Wisniewski grabbed four passes for 114 while Beccard had the one catch for 19 yards.
