City looks to repair leaking roof

ALPENA -The Alpena Municipal Council voted to hire Meridian Contracting Services for $6,000 to do a study on the roof at the Alpena Public Safety Building. The roof has several small leaks, as well as an issue of sliding snow the council wants to have fixed with the recommendation of Meridian.

City Engineer Rich Sullenger said the roof is not failing altogether but some repairs and a system needs to be made to take care of the current issues with the building.

“The condition of the roof is not critical and we don’t have water pouring into the building, but we do see some leakage from what appears to be the roof/wall joints,” Sullenger said. “Ice and snow damage to the gutter system has been an ongoing problem for at least the last 10 years. The ice builds up, slides off the roof and tales out the gutter system. We want a complete evaluation of the roof. Find out where the leakage is and look at finding a way to manage the ice and snow buildup on the roof, so we can put the gutters back up and not have to worry about having them sheared off.”

Sullenger said once Meridian gives its recommendation for what needs to be done to the roof, the city will put the needed work out for bid and have the project done.
