Community Development Building to get a facelift

ALPENA – The Community Development Building is the home of the Alpena Area Chamber of Commerce, Target Alpena, the Alpena Downtown Development Authority and the Alpena Convention and Visitors Bureau.

In many ways it is the center of all economic issues in Alpena and because of its importance the chamber board has implemented a plan that will update the building to better fit the needs of the the workers, as well as provide a pleasant experience for visitors.

Chamber Executive Director Jackie Krawczak said the remodeling to the building is taking place in steps. She said there already has been a great deal of improvements made on the interior and soon the exterior will be updated to better fit the downtown.

“We divided the renovations of the building into several phases,” Krawczak said. “A couple year ago we did some improvements to the inside by moving the lobby, adding a conference room and putting in new windows and doors. We also arranged the interior to better suit our needs.

“Because of these improvements we have seen extreme improvements in our power bills, as well as provide more privacy for the workers. Now we don’t have visitors walking through our work area. It also is a more comfortable place for our guests overall. We have received a lot of compliments on how nice the work on the inside turned out and get compliments on how beautiful it is.”

Krawczak said the plans for the outside of the building are complete and if the weather cooperates, work on it could begin soon. She said if not then it will begin in the spring. She said the new look will help fit with the work that has been completed inside.

“The face of our building needs to match what is going on inside, so the next phase is to address the exterior,” Krawczak said. “We have the plans, have hired a contractor and we hope to see something done yet this fall, but it will be weather dependent. It will depend on the schedule of the contractor we hired and the weather. Once it begins it will only take a couple weeks to wrap up the project.”

Once the outside of the building is complete there is one more phase to have done.

“We still have a couple of interior rooms to do,” Krazczak said. “We have the kitchen and the restrooms that will be done and then another space connected to my office. We also have some drywall and carpet work that needs to be done in a couple offices.”
