ACC XC finishes 7th at Jayhawk Invite
The Alpena Community College cross country team got back into action on Friday at the Jayhawk Invitational in Muskegon. The Lumberjacks finished fourth in the junior college ranks and seventh place overall. After a three week hiatus from competition, the Lumberjacks were able to back into action on a perfect fall day.
“Today was a great opportunity to see where we stand in the region and where we need to be in two weeks; at Regionals, when it really matters” ACC Coach Mark Jacobs said. “We have been busting it for the last three weeks and it has not been easy for anyone. Right now as a team, we are worn down; but are getting in the shape we need to be in. We’ll begin our taper late next week and be at full strength both mentally and physically by the time Regionals roll around. The goal today was to get in a good tempo run and work hard, we did that. Even with one of our top runners out (Travis LaCross), we were just behind Jackson in the standings.”
Leading the way for the Lumberjacks was Chad Zagacki (27:36), Jon Fitch (28:58), Jake Spaulding (30:10), Brandon Gibson (30:30), Paul Wilbert (30:48), Luke Spaulding (31:35), Brent Heberling (31:39), Zane Forintos (32:05), Andrew Sumerix (33:18), JD Niergarth (33:34), and Kyle Urban (34:15).
In the women’s race, Katie Brownell led Alpena with a time of 26:20 while Erin Wright, competing in her first college race, ran a 30:15. Other runner of note was former Alpena High runner Amanda Dort who ran a 21:07 running for Hope College.
