TRAVERSE CITY- The Alpena boys soccer played with a better effort on Thursday against Traverse City Central, but came up empty-handed in a 3-0 loss.

Central took a 1-0 lead with a goal in the final minute of the first half and capitalized on a missed chance by Alpena (4-9-1, 2-7 Big North) in the opening minute of the second half to score again. Central added a final tally with three minutes to play.

“The effort was outstanding,” Alpena coach Tim Storch said. “I’m pleased with the way they rose to the challenge and competed.”

Storch was impressed with the efforts of Gray Martin, Jacob Kozlowski, Mitch Mead, Jacob Gapske and Giulio Fantasia during the game.

Alpena will be on the road for three games next week: at Sault Ste. Marie on Tuesday, at Ogemaw Heights on Thursday and at Tawas on Friday.


Posen 3, Hale 0

HALE-The Posen volleyball team made short work of Hale on Thursday, beating the Eagles 25-9, 25-20 and 25-9.

“The girls played great, the best I’ve ever seen them play together,” Posen coach Michelle Mulka said. “They kept the lines of communication open all game and I’m happy with how they played.”

Korynn Hincka led Posen with 12 kills. Ashley Meyers had eight assists and three aces, Mercedes Kowalski had 12 assists and Kayla Lenard and Amy Buczkowski had four aces each.

Posen plays in a tournament on Mackinac Island this weekend.

Onaway 3,

Gaylord St. Mary 0

GAYLORD-The Onaway volleyball team swept Gaylord St. Mary on Thursday to improve to 4-0 in Ski Valley Conference play and 24-4-3 overall.

Onaway won 25-10, 25-22 and 25-12.

Mariah Ehrke led Onaway with 13 kills, 12 digs and two blocks; Lexi Szymoniak added nine kills and 12 digs; Devin Bristley had four aces and 16 digs; Sara Fullerton had seven kills, two aces, seven digs and two blocks; Taylor Ehrke had 31 assists, two aces and six digs and Shyanne Corey had three digs.

Onaway plays in a tournament in St. Ignace on Saturday.

Alcona 3, Mio 1

MIO-The Alcona volleyball team picked up a four-set win against Mio on Thursday, 25-21, 25-21, 24-26 and 25-11.

“The girls played pretty consistently in the first cuople of sets and moved the ball really well along the net,” Alcona coach Kristi Arnold said.

Karina Cole led Alcona offensively with 15 kills and defensively with seven digs. Sierra Forsythe had nine kills.

“She (Forsythe) was very strong on the outside,” Arnold said.

Cole, Forsythe and Katelyn Nelson all had four aces.

Alcona is now 4-1, excluding tournament play. The Tigers travel to Hillman on Monday.


Alpena 6,

Bay City Central 2

UNIVERSITY CENTER-The Alpena boys tennis team beat Bay City Central 6-2 on Wednesday at Delta College.

Alpena swept the singles flights with Abram Purol winning at No. 1 singles (6-0. 6-0), Andre Gagnon winning at No. 2 singles (6-0, 6-0), Aaron DeCaire winning at No. 3 singles (6-2, 6-2) and Greg Kucharek winning at No. 4 singles (6-1 and 6-0).

In the doubles flights, Samyak Harsh and Noah Barney-Steinke won at No. 1 doubles (6-2, 6-0) and Patrick Connon and Cameron DeCaire won at No. 4 doubles (6-1, 7-6, 7-1). Wyatt Hanna and Ben Goren lost at No. 2 doubles (3-6, 7-5, 6-7) and John Chen and David Resnick lost at No. 3 doubles (1-6, 6-1, 2-6).


Alcona’s Quick wins Oscoda Invitational

OSCODA-Alcona’s Megan Quick won the girls race at the Oscoda Invitational on Tuesday, finishing in 21:42. Hannah Terpstra was seventh with a time of 24:15, Lilly Manning was 15th with a time of 25:34 and Samantha Schott was 46th with a time of 38:24.
