WEST BRANCH- Ogemaw Heights took advantage of opportunities in a Big North game against Alpena on Friday, defeating the Wildcats 32-7.

Ogemaw’s Ben Hartley intercepted a Tyler Pintar pass and returned it 28 yards for Ogemaw’s first score in the first quarter. Wildcats returned the favor on a six-play drive, which ended with an outstretched score to Josh Bell from 32 yards out. Brad Styma added an extra point to give the Wildcats (1-2) a short-lived 7-6 lead at the 5:37 mark of the first quarter.

Devin Griffus found wide receiver Jack Vliet from 40 yards out with 3:07 left in first quarter to give Ogemaw the lead back.

The Wildcats held the Falcons scoreless in the second quarter until Jack Awrey broke numerous tackles on the way to a 60-yard touchdown run with 2:07 remaining in the half. Awrey scampered for a Falcons 16 yard run midway through the third quarter. Ben Hartley finished Ogemaw’s scoring on a four yard run.

Tyler Pintar was 9-for-22 in passing for 89 yards, with one touchdown pass and two interceptions.

In the rushing deptartment, Jordan Ferguson rushed 10 attempts for 42 yards. Dakota Patterson had four rushes for 34 yards, and Ben Manning had four rushes for 34 yards.

In the receiving deptartment, Josh Bell had two receptions for 33 yards. Kaleb Smith had two receptions for 36 yards.

“We’re just going to pick our heads back up and get back to practice on Monday.” Alpena coach Mel Skillman said.

The Wildcats host Cadillac on Friday.

Hillman 48, Au Gres 8

AU GRES-The Hillman football team defeated the Au Gres on Friday with a final score of 48-8.

Kenny Kolcan carried 15 times for 216 yards and three touchdowns. Ty Jones was 10-of-17 passing for 120 yards and two touchdowns. Mason VanPamel had four catches for 49 yards and one touchdown.

“Defense played a lot better tonight. It’s a work in progress and it’s all starting to come together” Hillman coach Bill Koenig said.

Hillman (2-1) will be home next Friday against Rogers City.

Whittemore-Prescott 0

WHITTEMORE-The Rogers City volleyball team swept Whittemore-Prescott on Thursday in its first North Star League match, winning three sets 25-13, 25-7 and 25-11.

“We had a bit of a slow start, but once we clicked the girls did really well and they put the ball into play in the right spots,” Hurons coach Jackie Quaine said.

Rogers City (12-5-1, 1-0 NSL) was led offensively by Jenna Tulgetske with 10 kills and seven aces. Sarah Meredith pitched in with seven kills while Cassie Brege had 18 assists.

Defensively, Rogers City was led by Megan Quaine with 17 digs, while Megan Brege had 11 digs.

“It was a really fun game for us tonight, especially in serving. They had 22 aces. It was just fun to watch the girls out there, playing so well and really clicking as a team,” Quaine said.
