GAYLORD-The Alpena boys soccer team rebounded from a 1-0 deficit at halftime with three straight second half goals on the way to beating Gaylord 3-2 on Thursday.

Alpena (4-5-1, 2-3 Big North) came out firing in the opening minutes of the second half and Zach Kendziorski and Peter Guest tallied goals to give Alpena the lead. Willie Santos Perez assisted on Kendziorski’s goal and Mitch Mead assisted on Guest’s tally.

Mead added an unassisted goal for Alpena’s final score.

“He play exceptionally well,” Alpena coach Tim Storch said of Mead. “We played very good the entire game. The mark of a growing team is facing adversity and coming back.”

Gaylord added a goal late in the game on a penalty kick.

Alpena plays at Cadillac on Tuesday.


Hillman 3, Mio 1

MIO-Jensen Tchorzynski had 26 kills and the Hillman volleyball team defeated Mio in four sets on Monday, 23-25, 25-18, 25-21 and 25-22.

Tchorzynski added 29 digs. Alissa Jones had eight kills and 17 digs; Eden Hunt had 18 digs, Kalen Tchorzynski had 22 digs and Riley Appelgren had 33 assists.

“Jensen attacked the ball really well tonight. She hit the holes and Riley did a good job setting her up,” Hillman coach Amy Moir said.

Posen hosts Hillman on Tuesday.


Alpena 14,

Ogemaw Heights 6

Joe Ayala threw two touchdown passes and the Alpena JV football team earned its first win of the season on Thursday, defeating Ogemaw Heights 14-6.

In the second quarter, Ayala hit Wesley Garant for an 24-yard touchdown and on the last play of the half, Ayala found Bret Auger for a 24-yard score.

Brody Nowak led Alpena (1-2) with 75 rushing yards and Ayala added 60.

Defensively, the Wildcats were led by Ayala, Brett Gapske and Tyler Erickson.

Ogemaw scored late in the fourth quarter on a touchdown pass from Caleb Ostrander to James Rogers.

Alpena plays at Cadillac next week.


Alpena 34, Ogemaw Heights 8

Aaron Reed’s big night propelled the Alpena freshmen football team to a 34-8 win over Ogemaw Heights on Thursday.

Reed ran for two scores, passed for another and added a blocked punt return for a touchdown as well as an interception return for a score.

After a scoreless first quarter, Reed put Alpena (1-2) on the board with 7:05 left in the half. With 16 seconds left in the half, Casey Woytaszek hit Jacob Barlow with a four-yard touchdown pass. Reed hit Woytaszek for the two-point conversion.

Both teams went scoreless in the third quarter before Reed took over. He ran in a touchdown from 23 yards out with 6:31 left in the game and added a two-point conversion.

With 5:28 left, Reed blocked a punt and raced to the end zone for an eight-yard score. Just 17 seconds later, Reed intercepted a lateral and raced 42 yards to paydirt, giving Alpena a 34-0 lead.

Before the end of the game, Ogemaw earned a safety and scored its only touchdown on a two-yard run from Gavin Miller.
