Rezoning approved for sections of State Ave., Campbell
ALPENA – The Alpena Planning Commission approved the rezoning of a section of State Avenue and Campbell Street from R-2 single residential to CCD, commercial corridor district.
Dr. Kirk McAnsh and Diane Diamond, the two independent property owners of the four lots, said they currently own buildings in which businesses are operating. They requested the rezoning because should a fire or some other event cause the destruction on the businesses, they would be unable to rebuild unless it was for a residential property.
“The main reason I want the property rezoned is to protect my interests and investments,” McAnsh said. “I have no plans to see or to expand at this time I just want it zoned that should something happen I could just rebuild.”
After listening to the report and recommendation by Planning and Development Director Adam Poll the planning commission voted to approve the rezoning. The properties affected are 523-525 and 603 State Avenue, as well as 241 E. Campbell Street.

Poll shared some correspondence from the public about the recent update of the city’s comprehensive plan update. The commission is going to review the comments and then will respond. The letters and emails also were forwarded to the Northeast Michigan Council of Governments, which assisted the city in updating the plan. The plan is updated every five years.
Poll said another rental rehab property has been complete. He said the house on 402 W. Washington Avenue has been completed and the project at 403 is nearing its finish.
