United Way kicks off 2013-14 campaign

The United Way of Northeast Michigan kicked off its 2013-14 campaign on Friday in conjunction with the Alpena Area Chamber of Commerce Good Morning Alpena Breakfast at the APlex.

Mike Mahler, president and CEO of First Federal of Northern Michigan, and his wife Barb are serving as this year’s United Way chairpersons. They said they are both honored to be a part of such a wonderful organization as the United Way.

“United Way can be much more strategic and deliberate in advancing the common good, they focus their energies on areas that will make a significant and lasting change,” Mike Mahler said.

Germaine Stoppa, executive director of the United Way, said United Way had supported 14 agencies in 2012 and those agencies assisted 10,786 people. In 2012 it distributed $122,685 to funded agencies, food pantries, mass feeding locations and health services. She said the first go around with the emerging needs fund in March it distributed $5,173 to five different agencies.

The public, or official, portion of the campaign continues through Nov. 8.
