Ossineke man investigated for bicyclist death

ALPENA – Traverse City Police Department detectives said Friday there were no new developments in their search for a hit-and-run suspect, who may have killed a 29-year-old cyclist in July. However, they and the Alpena Post of the Michigan State Police have teamed up to investigate the case. Sources said law enforcement is looking at an Ossineke resident as a person of interest.

The man has not been identified, but he has been interviewed and five vehicles he is involved with have been searched.

No one at the Alpena post was available to comment.

According to stories in the Traverse City Record-Eagle, 29-year-old Kelly Boyce Hurlbert was riding home from work on her bicycle around 1:50 a.m., July 5. In the 600 block of Washington Street she was struck from behind by a dark-colored pickup truck.

Family friend Mike Moran said her husband, Pauly Hurlbert, received a call from police that she had been hit 50 yards from their home and rushed down the street to comfort her. The couple had been married almost a year.

“The town is very upset about this,” said Moran, 33. “Kelly was dragged over a block and a half, screaming, and people are angry, because it was a brutal act of violence. It was intentional. Nothing like this has ever happened here.”

The Record-Eagle stated that detectives received more than 600 tips and have spent the last two weeks talking to the Alpena County man.

Moran offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest, and that figure has grown to $50,000, as a result of additional donations.

“Pauly is doing about as well as he can,” Moran said. The two are in a band together and Moran said he served as best man at the couple’s wedding. “It’s been over a month now and we’re all starting to figure out what our lives are going to be like now.”
