Editorial: Best-kept secret is finally being told
The best-kept secret is slowly leaking out and is a secret no more – Alpena and Northeast Michigan is a great place to live or visit. Residents and visitors have known this all along, but word is getting out and more people want to discover it for themselves.
This summer Alpena has seen visits by the cruise ship Yorktown, with two more to come, and it hosted the HOG Rally. Plus travel writers from around the country were in the area last month and hopefully they will spread the word even more about all our area has to over.
Next year already holds potential as well. It was announced earlier this year that the Model A Roundup will be in Alpena in September 2014.
Earlier this week came official word that the 2014 MATE International Remotely Operated Vehicle Competition will be held in Alpena in June. The ROV competition will, according to Jill Zande, associate director and competition coordinator, bring about 800 people to Alpena for three days.
All this means more exposure for our area, and if we succeed in being as welcoming to the Model A association and the ROV competitors as we were for HOG motorcyclists, it’s two more groups of people who will leave the area with positive things to say about our communities.
The secret is out. Ultimately, that can be beneficial for everyone.
