City names new planning director

ALPENA -The city of Alpena has found its new planning and development director. Adam Poll, a Cedar Springs native who most recently worked as an associate planner in Waterloo, Iowa.

Ciry Manager Greg Sundin said Poll was chosen out of 13 applicants for the position and he survived a second interview process in which the field was narrowed to five. Sundin said one finalist withdrew from consideration and Poll was determined to be a better fit than the other four.

Sundin said Poll’s experience and determination to move up from his current position were a couple of the reasons he was hired and why he believes Poll is a good choice for the job that Sundin has been doing, even though he is also city manager.

“He has experience in things such as historic preservation, He worked with the downtown there and the organizations, as well as worked with the planning commission and the zoning board of appeals and he had a very strong desire to come here,” Sundin said. “He has a lot of enthusiasm, he is young, but he is very anxious and wants to expand himself, which was going to be very hard for him to do there. He was sort of pigeon holed and kind of low on the totem pole and in order for him to expand and do other things, it would have taken him a long time.”

Sundin said Poll will be able to start work almost immediately. He will be introduced to Alpena Municipal Council during Monday’s meeting and then a special welcome reception will take place Tuesday morning, which is also the same day Poll will report for his first day of work. Sundin said the reception is not open to the public, but will provide the city staff, various governing boards, local planning agencies and the media a chance to welcome Poll to Alpena.

As with the other other department heads Poll is not a contracted worker.

“There are no contracts with any of the admin staff,” Sundin said. “Once you’re hired you are an at-will employee.”
