Hillman 9-10 softball headed to state semifinals
ESCANABA-The Hillman Little League All Star 9-10 Softball team has advanced to the State semifinals after defeating Cheboygan 8-5 Tuesday in the quarterfinals.
Hillman now one of four teams left in the state. Hillman had previously beaten Essexville in the Sweet 16 and Reed City in the Elite 8.
No Hillman Little League team had previous made it to the state finals.
Bailey Schook, Abbie Funk, and Allie Funk pitched two innings each in each of the playoff games.
Hillman trailed 4-0 after two innings, but took a 7-4 lead in the fifth inning to stage a come-from-behind victory.
Strong defensive play fromp layers like Meghan Roznowski helped hold off strong hitting from Cheboygan.
Schook helped turn a double play in the fifth inning and Funk made a running catch to end the inning.
Hillman will face top-ranked Jackson Northwest in a 10 a.m. match-up today with the winner advancing to the state championship game on Thursday.
Hillman had previously won playoff games against Bay City (6-3) and Reed City (14-0 in four innings). The first two days of the tournament were rained out, so the format was changed to single elimination and Hillman was ranked fourth.
