Alcona readies for sending out tax bills
HARRISVILLE – Summer property tax bills for Alcona County should start hitting mail boxes by the end of this month, officials said Thursday.
Approximately 18,315 notices were printed earlier this week at the Alcona County Equalization Office and were placed in boxes, sorted by township, description clerk Trena MacNeill said.
Township representatives then came in to pick up their forms, and will spend several days stuffing them into envelopes and mailing them.
Curtis Township Treasurer Betty Bonner has been stuffing winter and summer tax forms into envelopes since 1999.
“We do them at our leisure just sitting around here and it takes about three to four days,” said Bonner, who gets help from daughter, Deputy Treasurer Kathy Bonner.
The two women work evenings at a card table in a garage, which has a screened door. They also include a township newsletter in each envelope.
“I have 2,400 parcels, so it takes a while,” Bonner said.
Those who disagree with their residency or agricultural status listed on their bills can appeal to the July board of review, said Tammy Fall, assessor for Caledonia and Curtis townships. Full-time residents and people who farm at least 50 percent of their land qualify for reductions. Low-income property owners, who are experiencing a hardship, can also appeal.
The first thing property owners should do is contact their township supervisor, she said. They should also put documentation together. Residents seeking hardship exemptions need to fill out a lengthy form.
If so directed, the next step would be to go to the local review meeting July 16, although times vary among townships, she said.
Assesments and valuations are corrected in March, she said.
“We’re fixing errors on your tax bill,” said Fall, who has been at her job 13 years. “That’s what we’re doing.”
For the latest information, she recommended that property owners check their township website.
