21st annual PI Wooden Boat Show
PRESQUE ISLE – The Presque Isle Harbor will once again host a number of wood-and-chrome floating masterpieces for the 21st annual Wooden Boat Show Friday and Saturday.
Bob Van Dusen, show committee chairman, said it won’t just be wooden boat owners showing off their machines at the show. Once again, owners of what are known as “classic plastic” – vintage Fiberglas speed and sport boats – are welcome to enter their boats as well. Complete with food vendors, prizes and an arts and crafts show, there’s plenty going on during the show.
“We’re expecting a better turnout this year than we had last year, hopeful the economy will allow it,” he said, adding that around 3,000 people came out to see the show last year.
So far, there are 16 boats and 11 vendors signed up, Van Dusen said, and he expects more to come in as the week progresses. Show organizers will accept entries right up to the last minute. It’s $30 to enter a boat, and $35 to be a vendor at the arts and crafts show.
The show kicks off Friday at 11 a.m., with a lunch at the Presque Isle Harbor Association, according to the event schedule. Afterward, entrants will cruise around Grand Lake to show off their boats. At 7 p.m., entrants will be treated to dinner at the Old Historic Presque Isle Lodge.
Launching starts at 7 a.m. Saturday, with the opening ceremony following at 10 a.m., according to the schedule. The arts and crafts show, model boat display and shuttle buses to both the Old and New Presque Isle lighthouses run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the award ceremony at 4:30 p.m.
Visitors can put in their ballot from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to vote for best transom or boat name and best boat of the day, Van Dusen said. The Skipper’s Choice will also get an award.
Wooden boats are special because of the craftsmanship that go into them, Van Dusen said. They also handle very smoothly on the water.
“The craftsmanship is basically beautiful on them,” he said. “They don’t even make boats any more that could be that good.”
