ONAWAY- The Onaway softball team wrapped up the Ski Valley Conference title for the eighth year in a row on Wednesday on Senior Day, sweeping Pellston 6-0 and 11-1 to clinch the title.

The two wins give Onaway’s senior class a 62-2 record in conference play during their careers.

Emily Estep pitched a three-hit shutout for the Cardinals (17-6, 15-1 SV) in the opener and struck out 10.

At the plate, Lexi Szymoniak was 2-for-2 with two RBIs; Sam Brasseur was 2-for-2 with a double and a triple and an RBI; Emily Estep was 2-for-3; Erika Price was 3-for-3 with a double; Temara Lupu was 1-for-3 with a double; Megan Estep was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Morganne Badgero was 1-for-3.

Emily Estep allowed one run on two hits with two walks and four strikeouts in the nightcap.

At the plate, Price was 1-for-2 with a double and two RBIs; Jade Galer was 2-for-2 with a double, a bases-clearing triple and four RBIs; Emily Estep was 2-for-4; Devin Bristley was 2-for-2 with an RBI; Lindsay LaLonde was 1-for-1; Badgero was 1-for-3; Brasseur was 1-for-2; Megan Estep was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Lupu was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Onaway will play Rogers City in a Division 4 district semifinal at noon on Saturday at Rogers City.

Alcona 16, Au Gres 6

LINCOLN- The Alcona softball team won a predistrict game on Wednesday, topping Au Gres 16-6.

Kendra Cole earned the win for the Tigers, allowing three hits, two earned runs and two walks with five strikeouts in five innings.

Sam Schopfer was 2-for-2 with two walks for Alcona and Marisa Hirshfelt 1-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.

Alcona moves on to play Mio at 10 a.m. in a district semifinal at Alcona High School.


Alcona 5, Au Gres 0

LINCOLN-Nathan Fettes threw a one-hitter and the Alcona baseball team defeated Au Gres 5-0 in a predistrict game on Wednesday at Alcona High School.

The win moves Alcona (23-10) to a district semifinal game against Mio on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

Fettes struck out nine in five innings and Cody Franklin struck out five in two innings of relief.

Jared Steiner had two hits for Alcona as did Fettes, Joe Hudgins and Carson Jamieson.

Arenac Eastern defeated Fairview in the other semifinal game and will play Hale on Saturday at 10 a.m.


Alcona wins district title

INDIAN RIVER-The Alcona golf team captured a Division 4 district title Wednesday at Indian River.

The Tigers were led by Walker Kelly who shot a 77. Lucas Weichel finished with a 79 and Josh Mead had a 79. These three scores also took high honors for the top three individual scores as well.

The Tigers were rounded off with solid rounds from Dustin Yokom (89) and Spencer Winningham (91).

The team will travel to Traverse City for regionals next week.
