Young artists to show off creative abilities

The 11th annual Young Artists Exhibit opens April 4 at Art in the Loft and features the artwork of approximately 600 students from Northeast Michigan.

The exhibit, which is free and open to the public, runs through April 27.

Two special receptions have been planned for the young artists, their families and friends in the 7,000-square foot gallery that is located on the third floor of the Center Building, at 109 N. Second Avenue in downtown Alpena.

The first reception will be held April 12 from 6 to 8 p.m for students of the following schools: Besser, Hinks, Wilson, Ella White, Lincoln, Sanborn, Immanuel Lutheran, Bingham Arts Academy, All Saints and COACH.

The second reception is scheduled for April 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. This reception is for students from Thunder Bay Junior High, Alpena High School, ACES Academy, Summit Academy, Rogers City Elementary, St. Ignatius, St. John Lutheran, Johannesburg-Lewiston, Onaway, Posen, Atlanta and Alcona Schools.

The public is welcome to attend both receptions and enjoy snacks, beverages and the talented young artists.

In addition to the gallery exhibit, many local artists, art instructors and business owners are donating their time to conduct a diverse array of art workshops on three consecutive Saturdays, April 6, 13 and 20. Workshops range from drawing, painting, poetry, jewelry making, photography, music and dance, felting and even edible culinary art.

The workshops are available to children ages 4 and up. The cost is $10 per student or $9 for members (supplies are included). Early registration is recommended and appreciated. A full schedule of classes is available online at

Education Coordinator Brooke Stevens praised the collaborative effort of the region’s schools and teachers with Art in the Loft in making the exhibit possible.

“The Young Artists Exhibit is a great way to support the talent in our region and to enjoy the fantastic artwork that is being created by students in the schools,” Stevens said. “Students gain confidence and pride in their work when they see it displayed in the gallery.”

The Young Artist Exhibit welcomes students and families to participate in a wide variety of Saturday workshops during this exhibit. Art in the Loft provides opportunities for continued involvement in the arts for all ages through a selection of workshops and programs offered throughout the year.

These opportunities are only possible through the contributions of the sponsors and members who support the programming at Art in the Loft.

Art in the Loft recently kicked off its membership campaign for 2013, which focuses on youth and family involvement in the arts.

“We hope everyone will stop in to visit this incredible artwork and join us for one of the receptions, or volunteer to help out during the exhibit,” Stevens said. “It’s a great way for members and sponsors to see how their support really makes a difference in our region.”

Significant support for the Young Artists Exhibit is provided by underwriting sponsor Bank of Alpena and a product contribution from Pepsi. Committee members include: Stevens, Sue Fitzpatrick, Sarah Bedford, Grace Marshall, Mary Lappan, Lynne Freitag and Sue Lenart.

The gallery will be open during the exhibit Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. For more information call the gallery at 356-4877.
