Editorial: ACC efforts worth supporting
“Building a Powerful Future” is the theme of the new fundraising campaign at Alpena Community College.
The campaign, which hopes to raise $5 million for construction of a new Electrical Power Technology Center, is well under way. The state of Michigan has committed $2.5 million toward the project, and of the remaining $2.5 million match, to date nearly $1.6 million more has been raised. Part of that money was from a $1 million bequest from Ferris Werth.
In addition, the Besser Foundation has offered a challenge match up to $250,000 to ACC officials for this project. For every dollar raised by ACC now, the Besser Foundation will match that dollar.
College officials hope to construct this new center to house the highly popular utility technician program. Started in 1990, this program successfully places graduates into utility operations around the Midwest upon graduation. It has been one of ACC’s “shining stars” for quite some time now.
If fundraising is successful, the new center would be constructed adjacent to the World Center for Concrete Technology.
ACC remains an important part of our region’s educational opportunities, and its leaders have proven to be wise stewards of its finances, vision and direction over the years.
We wish college officials well on this fundraising effort, and we hope residents will consider a contribution as a wise investment for all of us.
