AUBURN HILLS-Mio 125-pounder Zach Mack is on the verge of a state title after two more wins at the Division 4 individual wrestling finals at the Palace of Auburn Hills on Friday.
Mack defeated Bronson’s Hunter Machus 2-1 and followed up with an 11-9 win over Jonesville’s Cartyer Ballinger. Mack will wrestle Fife Lake’s Matthew Elliott today in the title match.
Rogers City’s Evan Lamb (135) topped Hudson’s Wyatt Spangler 6-3 in his first bout and was defeated by another Hudson grappler, J.D. Waters, 4-1. Lamb will wrestle either Krayton Ruggles from Hart or Martin’s Ryan Hunt today for a chance to wrestle for third place.
The Hurons’ Caleb Pommerenke (189) dropped his opening match in the championship round to New Lorthrup’s Cody Symons by pin in 1:44. Pommerenke rebounded to win his second round consolation match over Decatur’s Cole Southworth 11-6. Pommerenke will wrestle Hesperia’s Eldon Graham in third round of consolation matches with the winner moving one match away from wrestling for third place.
Rogers City’s Jake Sobeck was pinned by Laingsburg’s Malachi Marshall in 2:05 in his opening round consolation match.
Onaway’s Isaac Nave pinned Bangor’s Ishmael Hodge in 2:45 in his first consolation bout lost to Schoolcraft’s Justin Bradford in overtime 4-3.
The Cardinals’ other qualifier, Morgan Robbins (140) lost his consolation bout 6-2 to Jayson Ellicott from Kent City.
RC teams fall in quarterfinals
STERLING HEIGHTS-The Rogers City bowling teams made it out of the qualifying block at the Division 4 state finals in Sterling Heights on Friday, but fell in the quarterfinals.
The Hurons’ girls team lost to Portland St. Patrick 1096-1068 and the boys team lost to Saginaw Valley Lutheran 1656-1581 after winning the qualifying block with 3449 points.
Several bowlers will compete in the individual finals today.
Alpena’s Will Rings will compete in the Division 1 boys individual finals. Rogers City’s Zach Hazel, Chris Bark, Alex Darga and Bailey Budnik will compete in the Division 4 boys individual finals. Rogers City’s Ashley Bunik, Jessica Butera, Rebecca Bannasch and Anna Lehman will compete in the Division 4 girls individual finals.
Standish 57, Mio 56
STANDISH-The Mio boys basketball team’s chance to go undefeated in the regular season came to a halt on Thursday after the Thunderbolts lost to Standish 57-56.
Seth Thomey scored 17 points for Mio (18-1) and Ben Lubitz added 16 points and six rebounds. Colton McGregor added six rebounds for the Thunderbolts and Aaron Georgieff had eight rebounds.
Mio opens district play on Wednesday at home.
