Thunder Bay Wrecks Pee Wee team wins third season title

The Thunder Bay Wrecks Pee Wee team went 4-0 over the weekend claiming another title by winning the NIHL Minor league division playoffs in Saulte Ste. Marie.

The weekend improved their record to 37-15-6. The Wrecks now hold three season titles: the NIHL Pee Wee AA Playoff Champions, the NIHL Pee Wee AA Division Champions & the NIHL Pee Wee AA Playoff Champions.

On Friday, the Wrecks defeated the Canadian Soo Greyhounds 4-0. The Wrecks outshot the Greyhounds 28-19. The first period was busy for the Wrecks. Cody Sumerix scored the first goal of the game with assists going to Kyle VanDusen and Anthony Berg. Owen Limback added an unassisted goal. Sumerix added another goal with assists from Colby Plowman and Dean Schmanski. Rayce Jacobs added a goal in the second period assisted by Nick Adrian. Goaltender Cooper Black earned the shutout.

On Saturday morning, the Wrecks defeated the Escanaba Hawks who they would face again in the championship game. The Wrecks outshot the Hawks 26-16 for a final score of 4-1. Nate Cosbitt scored during the first period. Assisting the goal were Limback and Alex Cosbitt. Dean Schmanski netted the next goal during the second period. VanDusen assisted on the goal. Rayce Jacobs added two goals in the second. Earning assists were Plowman, Sumerix, Schmanski and Limback. Goalie Cooper Black had netminding duties.

On Saturday afternoon, the Wrecks defeated the Petoskey Piranhas 3-0. Scoring for the Wrecks were Jacobs, Schmanski and VanDusen. Nate Cosbitt earned two assists while Alex Cosbitt and Jacobs added one apiece. Goalie Cooper Black earned the shutout.

With the Wrecks’ wins, they advanced to the championship game on Sunday against the Escanaba Hawks. The Wrecks outshot the Hawks 28-19 for a final score 4-2. Kyle VanDusen earned a hat trick. Nate Cosbitt scored the other goal. Earning the only assist during the game was Sumerix.
