TAWAS-The Tawas girls basketball team had a lot to be happy about on Thursday.

Not only did the Braves win on Senior Night, they won their regular season finale and won a share of the Huron Shores Conference title with a 53-47 win over Alcona at Tawas High School.

Olivia Janis scored 12 points for Tawas (11-7, 5-1 Huron Shores) as the Braves took control from the opening tip and outscored Alcona in every quarter but one.

“It was a huge win. You could say wins don’t get any bigger,” Tawas coach Todd Kaems said.

Alcona (14-3, 4-1 Huron Shores) trailed 27-25 at the half, but fought back to a 41-41 tie after three quarters. Tawas stepped up on both ends of the floor and outscored the Tigers 12-6 in the final period.

Karina Cole led Alcona with 19 points, nine rebounds and five assists. She is now one point shy of 1,000 for her career.

Nikki Smith added 12 points and Kendra Cole had 11 rebounds.

“Tawas had our number tonight. We played well in spurts but never could match their intensity,” Alcona coach Brad Cole said. “Our girls worked hard but just couldn’t find the basket at the end.”

Alcona hosts Posen on Saturday while Tawas begins district play on Wednesday after getting a first-round bye.

Tawas’ JV team topped Alcona 35-33.
