AHS wrestlers lose at personal regionals
SAGINAW- The Alpena wrestling team’s four regional qualifiers didn’t have quite the day they planned during a Division 1 individual regional on Saturday at Saginaw Heritage.
R.J. Centala (140) lost his opening-round match to Hartland’s Justin Rollins 8-4 and then lost to West Bloomfield’s Mario Giglio 11-6 in his second match; Felix Suszek (215) lost to Lakeland’s Tanner Graham by pin in 41 seconds and then was pinned by Hartland’s Chad Maks in 1:23; Aleco Hantzis (285) lost to North Farmington’s Justin Shelton 8-1 and then lost his second match 3-2 to Port Huron’s Guy DiCicco.
Alpena’s highest finisher was Dakota Patterson (160) who beat Walled Lake Northern’s Patrick Kern 3-2 in his first bout, but then dropped his next two matches. Davison’s Jordan Cooks pinned Patterson in 1:39 and Hartland’s Nate Smith topped Patterson 3-1 in the consolation round.
Six local wrestlers qualify for state finals at RC regional.
ROGERS CITY- Hosting a district on its home floor, the Rogers City wrestling team took three second-finishes at a Division 4 individual regional on Saturday.
Evan Lamb (135), Jacob Sobeck (125) and Caleb Pommerenke (189) all earned trips to the state finals and were among seven Rogers City wrestlers who competed.
Onaway collected a pair of third-place finishes and Mio earned one first-place finish.
Lamb began the day with a 12-6 major decision win over Leroy-Pine River’s Brady Long and followed up with a win over Hart’s Klayton Ruggles by an 8-1 decision. Lamb lost to eventual 135-pound champion Hesperia’s Chase Siersema by a 7-2 decision in a semifinal.
Pommerenke pinned Leroy-Pine River’s Tom Miller in 1:26 in his opening bout and followed up with a 11-4 win over Hesperia’s Eldon Graham. Like Lamb, Pommerenke lost to an eventual regional winner, dropping his match with Morley Standwood’s Steven Malloy by a 9-3 decision.
Sobeck pinned Hart Herman Velaquez in 1:15 in his opening-round match and then topped Fife Lake Forest Area’s Matthew Elliott by a 4-3 decision. Mio’s Zach Mack, who qualified for the state finals for the third time, defeated Sobeck in the final, 4-1.
Other wrestlers for the Hurons included Jack Ryan (140) who lost his opening match by technical fall to Hesperia’s Mark Workman and his consolation match to Sanford-Meridian’s Devon Posey 9-1; Austin Bober (145) who was pinned in 1:58 by Hesperia’s Cash Bolles and pinned by Sanford-Meridian’s Jess Levier in 2:11 in his second match; Justin Saile (103) was pinned in just 43 seconds by Hesperia’s Davian Gowens in his first match and lost to Leroy-Pine River’s Tony Moore 4-2 in his second bout; and Cam Urban (119) who was pinned by Traverse City St. Francis’ Zack Schaub in 2:56 and then lost to Hesperia’s Austin Kleiner 2-1.
Onaway’s Morgan Robbins (140) finished in third place and collected his 100th career win with an opening-round pin of Mio’s Harley Faust. Robbins lost his second match by 11-1 major decision to Leroy-Pine River’s Kyle Nixon, but rebounded for two wins; a pin in 5:05 of Posey and an 8-4 win over Manistique’s Cole Gonzalez.
Issac Nave (103) was Onaway’s other qualifier, beating Moore 11-5 and losing to Gowens 15-11 before reeling off two wins to qualify: a pin of Mio’s Patrick Stephens in 1:31 and a 8-0 win by major decision in a rematch with Moore.
Other wrestlers for Onaway were: Justin Ahnert (160) who was pinned in 1:32 Hesperia’s Lee Siersema, pinned Manistique’s Zavier Gonalez in 4:31 and lost to Leroy-Pine River’s Justin Seeman 11-4; Casey Watson (189) who lost to Hart’s Jonathan Zarzoza by 17-4 major decision, defeated Manistique’s Cheyene Shaver by pin in 1:46 and lost to Graham by pin in 1:36; and Joe Traynham (112) who lost to St. Francis’ Eric Wales 12-8; pinned Gwinn’s Alex Anderson in 1:59 and lost Hart’s Elijah Flores 8-6.
Mack was Mio’s lone state qualifier, pinning St. Ignace’s Cameron Collier in 15 seconds and Norway’s Cayleb Winkler in 33 seconds before topping Sobeck for a regional title.
Other wrestlers for Mio included: Foust (140) who lost to Robbins in 1:38, beat Iron Mountain’s Jacob Weslin 6-4 and then lost to Gonzalez 7-0; Scott Blamer (152) who was pinned by St. Ignace’s James Cryderman in 2:43 and then lost to Rudyard’s Zeb Dahms; and Stephens (103) who lost to Norway’s Zac Decremer by 9-2 major decision, pinned Ishpeming’s Emily Myers in 1:24 and got pinned by Nave in his final match in 1:31.
