Prep Roundup (2-12-13)

CHEBOYGAN-The Alpena boys basketball team took a trip to Cheboygan on Tuesday and came up with an 83-58 win.

The first quarter saw Alpena ahead 18-12 before the Wildcats exploded in the second quarter, outscoring Cheboygan by 20 to come up with a huge 46-20 lead at the half.

“We really came out well, especially in the second. Andy (Marwede) and Luke (Cordes) did a lot of damage inside while Tyler (Pintar) did a lot of work getting passes into those guys. We had a real nice offensive flow from all five guys on the flow,” Alpena coach John Pintar said.

The second half saw the teams both scoring the same 22-22, keeping Alpena up 68-44 while the fourth quarter saw Cheboygan outscore them by a single point to end 83-58.

Cordes led Alpena with 31 points while Marwede scored 19 points. Kam Fitzek contributed 11 points of his own.

Cheboygan’s Ben Pearson led his team with 17.

Alpena’s JV also came up with a win, 56-24. Top scorers included Ryan Cadarette with 15. It was a big night for the JV team as everybody on the team scored.

Alpena is now 10-4 overall and 5-4 in the Big North Conference. The Wildcats host Cadillac on Thursday.

Hillman 55,

Fairview 40

FAIRVIEW-The Fairview Eagles boys basketball team lost a tough game against Hillman on Tuesday. Hillman prevailed 55-40 in a game that saw the Tigers play aggressive defense.

“We really had great, aggressive defense tonight. We got 42 rebounds compared to their 22. That helps set up big defensive chances and second chance offensive points,” Hillman coach Eric Muszynski said.

Ty Jones led Hillman with 20 points while Mason VanPamel scored 10. VanPamel also snatched eight rebounds on the night. Mike Klein hit three treys to finish with nine points.

Fairview’s Hudson Szubelak scored 14 points while Kasson Willobee had 20.

Hillman is now at 9-5 overall and 8-3 in the North Star League. Fairview sits at 6-10 overall and 5-7 in the league.

Hillman hosts Posen on Friday.

Akron-Fairgrove 65, Alcona 63

AKRON-The Alcona boys took a trip on Tuesday to play against Akron-Fairgrove. The Tigers played a strong game against a tough team but came up just two points short in a 65-63 loss.

Alcona came up with an 18-16 lead in the first quarter, but Akron-Fairgrove pulled ahead 35-30 by the end of the first half. Alcona stretched its lead by three at the end of the third quarter to go up 49-41. Alcona came together for a big push in the fourth quarter but just couldn’t get a tying shot.

Carson Jamieson led Alcona with 17 points while Jared Steiner had 14 points, nine assists and eight steals. Trenton LaVerne had 10 points while Aaron Ritchie had six rebounds.

Austin Fader scored 34 points for Akron-Fairgrove.

Alcona is now 9-4 overall. They host Huron Shores Conference rival Oscoda on Friday.

Tawas 46,

Pinconning 37

TAWAS-The Tawas boys basketball team hosted Pinconning on Tuesday and came up with a big 46-37 win.

The first quarter saw Pinconning up 11-10. Tawas then jumped to a 23-22 lead at the half and continued to pull ahead in the second half.

The third quarter ended with Tawas up 34-29

“The second half we had really good D. We limited them to 15 points. Offensively we moved the ball really well and opened up great scoring opportunities,” Tawas coach Drew Decker said.

Jacob Salwey led Tawas with 20 points while Dylan Decker scored 11. Cole Schlicker of Pinconning scored 10.

Tawas’ JV team also came up with a win.

Tawas is now 7-7 overall and 3-1 in the Huron Shores Conference. The Braves host Whittemore-Prescott on Friday.


Hillman 50,

Fairview 40

HILLMAN-The Fairview girls basketball team travelled to Hillman on Tuesday and fought a tough game that they ultimately lost 50-40.

“We jumped out to a big lead in the first half. Fairview took better care of the ball than we did in the second. We relaxed a bit too much for my liking in that half but we still came up with a pretty comfortable win,” Hillman head coach John Kuzewski said.

The first quarter saw Hillman up 10-9 while they had a huge second quarter to go up 33-12 at halftime. The third quarter saw Hillman keeping a big lead at 44-25 while Fairview scored big in the fourth quarter but came up short in the end.

Morgan Hardies led Hillman with 18 points while Fairview’s Logan Winton had 15.

Hillman is now 8-8 overall and 8-4 in the North Star League. Fairview drops to 7-10 overall and 5-7 in the league. HIllman plays against Posen on Thursday while Fairview hosts Alcona on Monday.

Onaway 55,

Rogers City 31

ONAWAY-The Onaway girls basketball team met up with the Rogers City Hurons on Tuesday and came up with a big 55-31 win.

Onaway jumped out to a quick lead in the first quarter 12-9. The Cardinals stretched the lead to 20-18 with the Hurons nipping at their heals.

However, the third quarter really saw Onaway pull ahead 35-22 while outpacing them big in the fourth with a 55-31 final.

“Overall we held together really well defensively. That’s been a big key for us this year. We have kept quite a few teams to 30 or so and that’s gonna set up wins,” Onaway coach Marty Mix said.

Leading scorers for Onaway included Emily Estep and Mariah Ehrke with 11 points apiece.

Ehrke also picked up a double-double by snatching down 11 big rebounds.

Courtney Streich of Rogers City picked up 13 points including a big seven-point fourth quarter.

Onaway is now 14-4 overall and 10-4 in the Sky Valley Conference. Rogers City is now 1-13 overall and 0-6 in the Straights Area.

Onaway travels to Belaire on Thursday while Rogers City hosts Cheboygan on Thursday.
