ONAWAY-The Rogers City wrestling team captured its 30th team district title on Thursday, defeating Charlevoix in a Division 4 team district 54-29 at Onaway High School.

The Hurons, who had a first-round bye, gained victories in nine matches, including six by pinfall.

Winning for Rogers City were: Tommy Vogelheim (103) by pin; Justin Saile (112) by pin; Kam Urban (125) by forfeit; Jake Sobeck by (130) by forfeit; Evan Lamb (135) by forfeit; Jack Ryan (140) by pin; Blake Fessler (160) by pin; Caleb Pommerenke (189) by pin and Sage Sawyer (285) by pin.

“I think we wrestled very well. We lost a few matches, but the kids wrestled tough and determined,” Rogers City coach Pat Lamb said.

Charlevoix topped Onaway in the opening round 36-30.

Rogers City heads to individual districts this weekend in Ishpeming and will be in Manistique on Wednesday for team regionals.



Onaway 63, Pellston 28

PELLSTON-The Onaway girls basketball team got contributions from all around on Thursday.

Mariah Ehrke had a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds, Kallie Shimel had 17 points and every Onaway player scored as the Cardinals defeated Pellston 63-28.

“We’re sitting at a good spot right now with our record, but we don’t have a girl averaging over seven points a game,” Onaway coach Marty Mix said. “We’re playing a total team game right now and the girls are really buying into what we’re trying to teach.”

Onaway (13-4, 10-4 Ski Valley) jumped out to a commanding 19-2 lead after one quarter and kept up a steady pace, taking a 36-13 lead at the half and 48-17 after three quarters.

The Cardinals host Rogers City on Tuesday.

Fairview 61,

Atlanta 14

FAIRVIEW-Logan Winton scored 15 points, Johnna Weidbrauk added 12 and the Fairview girls basketball team bested Atlanta 61-14 in a North Star League game on Thursday.

Fairview (6-10, 5-6 NSL) jumped out to a 20-0 lead after the first quarter and stayed in control from there, building a 36-3 lead at the half and 49-11 advantage after three quarters.

Kayla Durocher paced Atlanta (1-13, 0-10 NSL) with 10 points.

“We did a bunch of different things offensively tonight. We did some different combinations of kids,” Fairview coach Marc Winton said.

Fairview plays Monday at Hillman.

Tawas 58, Oscoda 40

TAWAS-The Tawas girls basketball team picked up its third win in four nights with a 58-40 victory over Oscoda on Thursday.

Serina Sciotti paced Tawas (9-6, 3-1 Huron Shores) with 14 points and Ivy Shaaf added 13.

Tawas led 33-17 at the half and limited Oscoda to less than 10 points in three quarters. The Braves put the nail in the coffin with a 20-4 run in the third quarter.

Tory Lapointe led Oscoda with eight points.

Tawas hosts Whittemore-Prescott on Monday.
