Event caters to chocoholics

It was Lucy, that crabby 8-year-old from “Peanuts” fame who once claimed, “All I really need is love, but a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.”

For those given to Lucy’s way of thinking, the upcoming Chocolate Extravaganza at Trinity Episcopal Church fits the bill. This 14th annual event boasts dozens of different kinds of desserts all with chocolate as the starring ingredient.

“There are at least 60 different kinds of chocolate desserts. It’s crazy,” said Tina Wilson, whose job the day of the event is to help make sure the long dessert table stays stocked with chocolate goodies.

She also helps out each year by baking several kinds of dessert, including this year a batch of rocky road brownies.

“Usually about 30 people help with the baking,” Wilson said. “You definitely have to love chocolate if you go to this event.”

The 2013 Chocolate Extravaganza will be held Feb. 9 from 2-4 p.m. in the church fellowship hall. Among items on the dessert menu are brownies, fondue, fudge, petit fours, assorted chocolate cookies, chocolate mousse, chocolate pecan pie, black forest pie, chocolate raspberry torte, assorted other cakes and pies, and miniature chocolate pastries.

For those who like a little chocolate with their coffee, available options include a topper of chocolate whipped cream and chocolate coated spoons.

In addition to chocolate, the event will feature live music by the Greg Adamus Trio and 15 door prizes, including a chocolate bead bracelet.

All proceeds from this fundraiser event go toward the Parish Scholarship Fund that provides college scholarships to students who have attended Trinity Episcopal Church. Wilson is among past recipients of the scholarship. A 2007 graduate of Grand Valley State University with a degree in special education, she currently teaches at Hillman Community Schools.

“The scholarship was wonderful,” Wilson said. “It helped to pay for my books every year so I didn’t have to worry about that added expense.”

It is partially out her appreciation for having received the scholarship that Wilson now gives back by volunteering for the Chocolate Extravaganza. She serves on the committee that plans the event and helps to set up, in addition to her baking and working at the actual event.

Tickets are $10 per person, with children under 12 admitted for $5. Reservations can be made by calling the church office at 356-0576. The tickets also may be purchased at the door.
