TRAVERSE CITY The Alpena boys basketball team left Traverse City Central with a 57-39 win under its belts Friday night, which improves the Wildcats’ record to 8-3 overall and 4-3 in the Big North Conference.
The Wildcats led Central 26-23 at the half. Luke Cordes led Alpena with 19 points, followed by Kam Fitzek with 11 and Brad Styma with eight.
Alpena’s defense was the key to the win, especially in the second half.
Ethan Pilarski led Traverse City with 12 points.
Alpena will host Sault Ste. Marie on Tuesday.
The Alpena JV team lost 44-43 on a last second three-pointer.
Alpena’s freshmen team also lost, 48-40. Leading the Wildcats were Brett Gapske with 11 points, Joe Ayala with nine points, and Mitch Mead with seven.
Mio 77. Atlanta 39
MIO The Mio boys basketball team kept its winning streak alive with a 77-39 win over Atlanta Friday night, making its record 11-0 overall and 9-0 in the North Star League.
Mio’s 21-12 first quarter lead soon became a 36-23 halftime lead.
Micah Thomey led Mio with 19 points and Seth Thomey added 14.
Jake Chambers led Atlanta with 15 points followed by Garrett Badgero with 12.
Mio will host Alcona on Monday.
Arenac Eastern 36
TWINING The Hillman boys basketball team beat Arenac Eastern 47-36 Friday night at Arenac Eastern High School.
Dylan Ross and Tyler Jones each scored 12 points to lead the Tigers, followed closely by Mason VanPamel with 11. Arenac’s Tyler Card was the leader for the home team with 10 points.
Hillman led 19-16 at half time, then outscored Arenac 20-9 in the third quarter. Ross and Jones led the third quarter rally by scoring 12 of the 20 points.
Arenac had a hard time with the Tigers’ press in the third quarter, which was the difference maker in the game.
Hillman’s record is now 8-3 overall and 6-2 in the North Star League.
Alpena 3, Cadillac 2
CADILLAC-The Alpena hockey team picked up a key Big North win on Friday defeating Cadillac 3-2.
Sam Rumbles scored twice for the Wildcats (7-6-1, 3-3 Big North) and Zach Nash added a goal.
Arenac Eastern 51, Hillman 41
TWINING The Hillman girls basketball team dropped its game in Arenac Eastern Friday night by a score of 51-41.
Jensen Tchorzynski led the Tigers with 15 points and Brooke Schulte led Arenac with 15 points.
Arenac jumped out to a halftime lead and left Hillman to play catch-up, but unfortunately for the Tigers, there just was not enough time or energy to come back.
Hillman is now 7-6 overall and 7-3 in the North Star League.
