HILLMAN-In a battle of the two best girls basketball teams in the North Star League, Posen came out on top.
Korynn Hincka fall eight points short of breaking Posen’s career scoring record, but the Vikings still topped Hillman 64-40 on Wednesday at Hillman High School.
“We didn’t play our best tonight but that’s probably because Hillman put up one heck of a fight,” Posen coach Karl Momrik said.
The first quarter saw Posen (14-0, 9-0 North Star League) up 20-11 while the half ended with the Vikings up 30-19. The third quarter saw them burst ahead 48-27.
Hillman coach John Kuzewski commended his team’s effort, but said Posen’s full-court press eventually wore the Tigers down.
“I thought we played well in the first half and handled their press well,” Kuzewski said. “They continued pressing and eventually we wore down a little bit.”
Hincka led Posen with 22 points. Ashley Meyers scored 14 for Posen, while Bev Bednarski scored 12. Anna Couture was a big help to the Vikings as well with 10 points.
Jensen Tchorzynski scored 17 points for Hillman (7-5, 7-2 NSL) while Morgan Hardies had 15.
“We needed this kind of win tonight. It gave us a two game lead in the North Star League with five games to go which is a huge lead at this point,” Momrik said.
The Vikings play tonight at Fairview while Hillman plays at Arenac Eastern on Friday.

Top scorers for Posen included Nick Hincka who scored 25 points and had a double-double on the night. Brandon Dietz got 16 points as well.
“Overall the guys put in an excellent effort, the defense was there the whole game but some turn-arounds in the fourth quarter really hurt our chances at winning,” Posen coach Steve Hentkowski said.
