WEST BRANCH-The Alpena girls basketball team got a monkey off its back on Tuesday.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 21-1 lead in the first quarter against Ogemaw Heights and never looked back, topping the Falcons 50-33 to snap a six-game losing streak.
Christina Kollien scored eight points during Alpena’s first quarter run and finished the game with 18. Ami Milligan added nine points.
“It was a much-needed win. We shot a little better from the floor and we put on a lot of pressure, which created a lot of turnovers,” Alpena coach Jenny Poli said.
Alpena (3-7, 2-5 Big North) helped its cause by shooting 9-for-12 from the free-throw line in the first half.
Alpena led 30-11 at halftime and 43-17 after three quarters. Ogemaw outscored the Wildcats 16-7 in the final period.
The Wildcats host Traverse City Central on Thursday.
Alpena’s JV team won 38-36 over Ogemaw. Morgan Allen led the Wildcats with 12 points and Jordan Modrzynski added 10. Alpena is 5-5 on the season.
The Wildcats’ freshman team improved to 8-1 with a 32-29 win over the Falcons. Rachael Barkley led Alpena with seven points and Chloe Ferguson added five.
Tawas 66, Saginaw Arts and Sciences Academy 26
The Tawas girls basketball team earned a non-conference win over Saginaw Arts and Sciences Academy on Tuesday, winning 66-26.
Ivy Schaaf led the Braves with 24 points and Olivia Janis added 12.
Tawas led 23-7 after the first quarter and 33-13 at the half. The Braves took a 54-22 lead after three quarters and outscored Saginaw 15-4 in the final period.
Arenac Eastern 56, Fairview 47
FAIRVIEW-The Arenac Eastern girls basketball team had three players reach double figures and the Eagles topped Fairview 56-47 on Tuesday.
Shantel Murdick led Arenac with 23 points, Brooke Schulte added 17 points and Brooke Sendo chipped in with 12 points.
Arenac led 20-17 at the half, but pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring Fairview 21-9 in the final period.
Johnna Weidbrauk led Fairview (3-8, 3-5 North Star) with 16 points and Logan Winton added 12.
Fairview hosts Posen on Thursday.
Mio 58, Hale 34
HALE-Micah Thomey scored 16 points and the Mio boys basketball team won its tenth straight game with a 58-34 win over Hale on Tuesday.
Ben Lubitz added 13 points and seven rebounds for the Thunderbolts (10-0, 8-0 North Star) who led 25-6 at the half and 40-22 after three quarters.
Bryce Degrammont added 13 points for Mio and Aaron Georgieff had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Seth Thomey added five rebounds, five assists and five steals.
Ryan Richardson and Dan Katterman led Hale with eight points each.
Mio hosts Atlanta on Friday.
Fairview 59, Arenac Eastern 29
FAIRVIEW-Kasson Willobee scored 25 points and the Fairview boys basketball team beat Arenac Eastern 59-29 on Tuesday.
Hudson Szubelak added 16 points for the Eagles who jumped out to 15-4 lead after the first quarter and led 23-14 at the half.
Cody Yocum led Arenac with 12 points.
