Sno-Drift rally this weekend

ALPENA – This weekend will kick off Montmorency’s winter tradition Sno- Drift Rally, in Atlanta where spectators can view rally cars, meet competitors, participate in auctions, rally events, and enjoy racers speed on narrow, icy, snowy roads. Mike Schwartz, Atlanta chamber president, said this year’s event will be bigger than ever, fans will not be disappointed.

“Racers will start coming into town Tuesday through Thursday,” he said. “This event draws a lot of good people into town. I’m proud to say we have a lot of locals open their homes to racers and spectators too, because lodging is always full. It’s a great boost for Atlanta, Lewiston, and Hillman. It all happens in Montmorency County.”

The Sno- Drift Rally will feature competing cars and performances on icy and snowy roads, with a variety of challenges and classes, kicking off the 2012 Rally America National Championship series.

“We have a lot going on throughout the week, with fan appreciation in the streets of Lewiston on Friday, and in Atlanta on Saturday,” Schwartz said. “The pit area will be at Atlanta High School, which is really great for spectators. There will also be stages set for the races, and people can stand by and watch pit crews do repairs. There are racers at different segments of the roads during different times of the day, racing the clock for the best time.”

Pre-events will start as early as Wednesday, Jan. 23 with tests from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., but Friday will open the rally races in downtown Lewiston at 1 p.m. with rally car viewing starting at 11:30 a.m. and races to follow. Schedules of events and free spectator guides will be available in local businesses, and online.

The Super Special will also be highlighted this year, with a larger viewing area. Super Special events will cost $5 per person on Saturday, at the Lewiston Sand & Gravel pit, the first running will begin at 1:58 p.m. and the second will start at 3:24 p.m. Parking for the event will be limited, but busing will be available at Atlanta High School and from the Lewsiton Ace Hardware. Besides the super special races, the rest of the Sno-Drift Rally events are free and open to the public. Warming tents and concessions will also be available.
