GAYLORD-The Alpena wrestling team competed in the Gaylord quad on Wednesday and lost against both Gaylord and Ogemaw.

The first match saw Gaylord win 51-21. Individual winners for Alpena included R.J. Centala with a decision in the 145 weight class. Dakota Patterson won a decision in the 160 class. Austin Weekes won in the 189 class with a decision.

Felix Suszek got one of two Alpena pins wrestling in the 215-class. Aleco Hantzis got the second at heavyweight.

Alpena lost the second match to Ogemaw 59-12. Individual winners included a 152-class pin by Centala and a 189-class injury default win by J.D. Niergarth.

“Tonight just wasn’t our night. We had a long night and we wrestled really flatly tonight against tough competition,” Alpena head coach Jake Stenz said.



Alcona 63, Posen 58

LINCOLN-The Posen boys traveled to Lincoln to face the Alcona Tigers and fell 63-58 in a tight match-up on Wednesday.

Alcona led Posen in the first quarter 17-13 while Posen narrowed the lead to two at the half, 31-29.

The third quarter saw Alcona storm out to a 54-39 lead while Posen outscored the Tigers 19-9 in the last quarter.

Top scorers for Alcona were Trent LaVergne with 26 points and Jared Steiner with 15 points and nine assists. Posen was led by Nick Hincka with 29 points and Lucas Litwinski with 13.

Alcona is now 6-1 overall while Posen is 4-5. Alcona travels to Oscoda on Friday while Posen travels to Mio.
