Former News publisher Richards dies

Former Alpena News Publisher Philip Richards died Friday at Alpena Regional Medical Center at the age of 92. Richards held management positions at The News for more than 40 years.

Richards was a graduate of Alpena High School and the University of Notre Dame, then served in the Air Force during World War II. After his time in the Air Force, he returned to Alpena and began working at The News.

Upon returning to The News in 1945, Richards worked his way up to general manager in 1951, then took over as editor and publisher in 1961 following the death of his father, John Emmet Richards.

He is at Bannan Funeral Home where friends may call on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, from 2-8 p.m. with a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue at St. Bernard Catholic Church on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, from 11 a.m. until time of mass of Christian burial at 12 p.m. with Rev. Richard C. Schaeffer officiating. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.
